Wines By Region

The word wine comes from the Old English win, which derives from the Proto-Germanic *winam which was an early borrowing from the Latin vinum, (which can mean either the `wine` or the `vine`), from Aeolic Greek Fοίνος, (woinos) and from earlier languages such as Hebrew יין (yayin).

Wine producing Regions

Wine grapes grow almost exclusively between thirty and fifty degrees north or south of the equator. The world`s most southerly vineyards are in the South Island of New Zealand near the 45th parallel. However, the world`s most northerly vineyard is Blaxsta Vingård in Flen, Sweden, just above the 59th parallel. As a rule, grapevines prefer a relatively long growing season of 100 days or more with warm daytime temperatures (not above 95°F/35°C) and cool nights (a difference of 40°F/23°C or more).

Wine exporting countries

The 14 largest export nations (2005 dates) – France, Italy, Spain, Australia, Chile, the United States of America, Germany, South Africa, Portugal, Romania, Moldova, Hungary, Croatia and Argentina. California produces about 90% of the wine in the United States. In 2000, Great Britain imported more wine from Australia than from France for the first time in history.

* France, 22%
* Italy, 20%

Domaine Rosier,Blanquette de Limoux

Limoux in France is famous for the production of quality sparkling wines made by the same laborious method as Champagne. In fact they claim to have invented Methode Champenoise. Henri Guilheim, in his book 'Le Blanquette de Limoux', published in 1951 refers to a text dating back to 1531 which refers to 'flasks of Blanquette from St Hilaire'. It is even said that a certain Dom Perignon, attorney cellarer from Hautevilliers near Epernay in the champagne region went to the Abbey of Saint Hilaire a centurylater to take lessons in vinification from his Benedictine brothers. Produced from 90% Mauzac and 10% Chardonnay without chemical fertilisers. It has a bouquet with hints of acacia flowers and elegance. The character of the Chardonnay is evident in the flavour, full in the month and a fine mousse. We offer this bubbly as an ideal alternative to its more famous champagne at a much lower price. Really excellent. Hachette 3*** [read on...]

Dows Crusted Port 2003

Dow's Crusted Port is a blend of particularly full bodied Ports of very high quality from recent vintages (normally from the two or three harvests immediately preceding the bottling date). These Ports are matured in cask for some 12 to 18 months before being bottled without any fining or filtration. Dow’s Crusted Port is then aged for a further three years in bottle in the Dow’s cellars prior to being released for sale. This prolonged bottle-ageing gives this Port a superb style and character with the distinctive Dow’s dry finish. Dow’s Crusted Port is an outstanding wine with which to end a fine lunch or dinner and is ready for drinking when released onto the market, but it will continue to improve in bottle. Vibrant and full of ripe red-berry fruit flavours balanced by rich black chocolate over tones, Dow’s Crusted Port is superb value for money and gives many of the unique flavours of the great bottle matured Vintage Ports at a fraction of the price. Elgin Vignier 2009

Elgin Vintners is a small group of wine estates who have grouped together to produce and sell their wines, each estate specializing in a seperate grape variety. Elgin is the centre of the apple growing region in the Cape where Appletizer was first produced and the cool climate is perfect for producing excellent Viognier white wine. Pale gold colour with an exotic fruity bouquet of apricots and white peaches. The flavour is rich and full in the mouth with delicious complexity a lime and citrus freshness with a very gentle discreet broading of flavours because of a brief sojourn in French oak. The farewell is balanced, crisp and long. Perfect with sushi, Thai food, spicy dishes and chicken with lemon sauce. [read on...]
