Wines By Region
The word wine comes from the Old English win, which derives from the Proto-Germanic *winam which was an early borrowing from the Latin vinum, (which can mean either the `wine` or the `vine`), from Aeolic Greek Fοίνος, (woinos) and from earlier languages such as Hebrew יין (yayin).
Wine producing Regions
Wine grapes grow almost exclusively between thirty and fifty degrees north or south of the equator. The world`s most southerly vineyards are in the South Island of New Zealand near the 45th parallel. However, the world`s most northerly vineyard is Blaxsta Vingård in Flen, Sweden, just above the 59th parallel. As a rule, grapevines prefer a relatively long growing season of 100 days or more with warm daytime temperatures (not above 95°F/35°C) and cool nights (a difference of 40°F/23°C or more).
Wine exporting countries
The 14 largest export nations (2005 dates) – France, Italy, Spain, Australia, Chile, the United States of America, Germany, South Africa, Portugal, Romania, Moldova, Hungary, Croatia and Argentina. California produces about 90% of the wine in the United States. In 2000, Great Britain imported more wine from Australia than from France for the first time in history.
The leaders in export volume by market share in 2003 were:
* France, 22%
* Italy, 20%
* Spain, 16%
* Australia, 8%

In this categoryCremant de Limoux AOC Rose Martinolles NV
This wine is 70%Chard,20%Chenin B & 10%Pinot Noir. The grapes are harvested manually on a selective basis to ensure max quality. The Pinto Noir grapes are left in the press for5-6 hrs to extract colour from their skins. Fermentation then takes place in stainless tanks at a cool 18deg to conserve its fruit. Secondary fermentation takes place in bottle to create fine bubbles after which they are stored on wooden slats. 3 months before releasing the sparkling wine for sale, the lees (dead yeast sediment) is disgorged & the bottle is re-corked. Process is exactly the same as for champagne. The robe of this pink methode champenoise sparkling wine is pale pink with a shade of raspberry. It has fine effervescence with a persistant mousse cordon formed by the fine bubbles. The nose is slightly perfumed with fragrance of Frais de Bois strawberries & hint of redcurrant. Effervescence in the mouth with hints of grapefruit & blood orange. [read on...]

Cuvee des Ardoises du Ch. des Earles
Ardoises meaning `slaves`, is the name of the vineyard it is produced from. It is the `second label` of Cháteau des Erles, stretching over 70 hectares and is set in a perfect location amid breathtaking landscapes, overlooking Villeneuve des Corbieres. The Carigan, Grenache and Syrah vines grown to produce this very splendid and special wine are very old. The windy climate provides the vegetation with the right amount of ventilation preventing diseases that thrive in humidity, thus eliminating the use of pesticides. The unique character of each grape variety is respected and with a carefully tailored approach, the very best is obtained out of each part of the vineyard. Several cuvées are produced. This wine is their
flagship, their very best, and what an exceptional Fitou it is, reflecting
the quality of the `terroir`, and for its outstanding quality it has been
recognised as ``the Crû of Fitou`` and is one of the finest wines of Languedoc-Roussillon. [read on...]
