Leacocks
Leacocks first landed on the lush green sub-tropical Atlantic island of Maderia in 1711 and were later establish them selves as one of the leading families in the Maderia wine trade. Amongst the most distinguished of families was Thomas Slapp Leacock whose tenacity in identifying and treating phylloxera vine disease at his Saint John vineyard saved the islands traditional grape varieties. He was one of the first to realize that American root stocks were resistant to the disease and he was later to bequeath his outstanding research to Cambridge University.
